Our project focuses on four cities where the Cartography MSc program takes place: Munich, Vienna,
Dresden, and Enschede.
Using georeferenced historical maps, our platform allows users to compare
the past and present side by side. Slide between maps from different periods, OpenStreetMap, and
satellite imagery to see how cities have grown, changed, and transformed over the centuries.
For Munich and Dresden, we’ve added special storytelling features:
- In Munich, discover the city’s most famous landmarks with a dedicated map slider, letting
you compare their historical appearance directly on the map.
- In Dresden, explore the city’s
formation from the 5th century to the 19th century through an illustrative visual timeline.
For Vienna and Enschede, we plan to develop storytelling features based on what we discover while
studying in the cities.
This project is supervised by Juliane Cron and supported by Cartography M.Sc.
The old maps used in this project are primarily taken from the David Rumsey Map Collection, the Bavarian State Library, and other online libraries and archives. The historical information is mostly sourced from Wikipedia. To illustrate the formation of Dresden, maps from Krause, Bruno: The Historical Development of the Royal Capital and Residence City of Dresden from a Sorbian (Wendish) Village to the Present-Day Metropolis. Illustrated Booklet were vectorized.
